Japan to Donate around $1M to Medical and Education Sectors
The Japanese government yesterday agreed to provide $968,390 to two organisations involved in improving medical care and promoting education in Cambodia.
The grant contract was signed on Monday between Japanese Ambassador Mikami Masahiro and representatives of the two respective recipients, to carry out two projects.
The first is the Project for Enhancing Medical Systems to Practice Pediatric Surgery in Kratie province.
The Foundation for International Development/Relief (FIDR) will receive $694,539.
According to a Japanese Embassy press statement, in this project, FIDR aims to enhance the pediatric surgical care system in Kratie province through training for medical staff of the Provincial Referral Hospital, health centres and health volunteers in the province.
It said that in order to improve the quality of their services and create a safe medical facility, the organisation will also construct a surgical building for pediatric care.
The second is the Project for Promotion of Inclusive Education (IE) for Children with Disabilities by Enhancing the Practices in Model Area and Developing IE Evaluation System in which the Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR Japan) will receive $273,851.
It said that in this project, AAR Japan will create an evaluation tool for inclusive education practices, and carry out activities to support capacity building of the Commune Committee for Persons with Disabilities.
Through this project, the learning environment and quality of education for children with disabilities in the whole of Cambodia will be improved.
Ambassador Masahiro said that there is a lot of development in Cambodia but there are still challenges to improving peoples’ livelihoods.
“Japan will continue to cooperate with NGOs to find solutions with Cambodia such as in the poverty reduction, social, environment, health and education sectors,” he said
The Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects started in Cambodia in 2002 to support activities by Japanese NGOs to help Cambodia’s reconstruction and development efforts at the grassroots level.
Since 2002, the Japanese government has provided over $41 million for 130 projects, mainly in the field of primary education, health, agriculture and mine clearance in Cambodia.
