Cambodia asks Singapore for more human resource training

Cambodia has asked for more support from Singapore in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector to respond to worldwide advancements in technology.
The suggestion was made during a meeting between Labour Minister Ith Samheng and outgoing Singapore Ambassador Michael Tan at the ministry yesterday.
In the meeting, both sides committed to furthering Cambodia’s employment and human resources training.
Samheng discussed the progress of diplomatic relations, especially in the labour sector, saying that vocational training between Cambodia and Singapore has contributed significantly to the development of the Kingdom.
He said that Singapore has helped to provide many Cambodians with technical skills, especially by sending professional Singaporean teachers to Cambodia.
He added that Singapore has also contributed to improving health and safety in the Kingdom. It has helped to develop safety measures in factories and train health and safety experts, effectively reducing workplace accidents.
The minister expressed a further need for human resources in Cambodia and noted that Singapore has played a significant role in promoting the TVET sector.
“Cambodia also intends to continue its cooperation with Singapore and hopes that Singapore will continue to share its experience with Cambodia,” he said.
According to a Ministry of Labour statement yesterday, Ambassador Tan highlighted the efforts of the Singapore government and the Embassy of Singapore in providing technical and vocational training to Cambodian trainees.
He added that Singapore ranks second in the field of investment in Cambodia, and as Ambassador, he urges companies to invest responsibly in Cambodia according to the laws and regulations and organise training for Cambodian workers so that they can have a better livelihood.
The ministry statement said that the two sides pledged to continue to strengthen their cooperation, especially in the context of COVID-19 which both governments have prevented and resolved well and in a timely manner.
Ambassador Tan also thanked the Cambodian government for its COVID-19 response which created favourable conditions for Singaporean investors to resume their normal business operations.
He said he would convey Samheng’s request for the Singapore government to consider and continue to cooperate better with Cambodia.
Prime Minister Hun Sen has urged the public, especially the youth, to engage in vocational training as it will open more opportunities for employment. His remarks came ahead of the 3rd National TVET Day on June 15.
He encouraged more people to choose TVET as the country works toward adapting to the new paradigm of Industry 4.0.
