Nearly 30,000 court cases cleared during campaign
The Ministry of Justice announced on Friday it has cleared a backlog of nearly 30,000 criminal court cases within 150 days across five provinces.
Justice Ministry spokesman Chin Malin said yesterday that the court case backlog campaign is to serve the people’s interest.
“The aim of the exercise is to reduce congestion speedily and accurately in line with the law,” Malin told Khmer Times yesterday.
“Provincial courts across the country have dealt with 27,700 backlogs, equivalent to 71 percent,” the ministry said in a statement on Friday.
“The campaign committee is pleased to announce the successful clearance of backlog cases in Siem Reap, Koh Kong, Kampot, Banteay Meanchey, and Tboung Khmum provinces,” it said.
The ministry began the backlog clearing campaign on May 18.
The campaign committee lauded judges, prosecutors, court clerks, court officials and relevant institutions for the backlog clearance to serve the people’s interest and promote justice.
The committee strongly hopes that provincial courts in other provinces will subsequently follow this achievement, the statement said.
“The committee also hopes that all relevant actors will continue to be more active to take part in clearing the backlog as planned by being speedy, accurate, fair and non-corrupt,” it said.
Licadho deputy director of monitoring Am Sam Ath told Khmer Times yesterday that the case backlog campaign in provincial courts is being done to speed up court case procedures, adding that since its establishment the courts have sped up a number of processes.
