Inter-ministries have started to boost the local animal feed industry to supply domestic demand, and thus to make the country self-reliant on animal feed.

A roundtable discussion between the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, took place Monday with the participation of private sector with an aim to examine the country’s ability to produce animal feed, electricity costs, challenges related to SMEs so as to encourage local investment, and reduce imports and people’s migration for work.

The meeting discussed the challenges for farmers in the animal raising and aquaculture chains in order to make their production more competitive with neighbouring countries.

Some key principle agreements were made in the meeting – enhancing local animal feed productivity with sufficient quality and competitiveness, ensuring sufficient supply of meat and fish to the local market with quality and safety, participating in raising the living standard of farmers, and expanding investment potential in creating livestock farms and animal feed factories, using local raw materials, and creating local jobs.

Prime Minister Hun Sen had called on relevant ministries and institutions to find way to encourage investors to inject investment on local animal feed industry.

“Local factories can increase production capacity, create jobs for local people, and make the country self-reliant on animal feed supplies, thus reducing imports,” he said during his recent visit to the Freshwater Aquaculture Research and Development Centre in Peamro commune, Peamro district, Prey Veng province.
