Ministries of Interior discusses cooperation to combat forgery
The Ministry of Transport has requested a cooperative effort with the Ministry of Interior in order to prevent forgery of identity documents when applying for motorcycle registrations, by connecting both departments’ online systems.
The request was made during a meeting between Minister of Transport Sun Chanthol and Minister of Interior Sar Kheng yesterday.
The meeting was held to evaluate motorcycle registration since the implementation of the one-stop registration services offices at the district level.
Standing secretary of state at the Ministry of Interior Sak Setha told Khmer Times yesterday that the ministries would need to discuss the technical aspects of the request, as it concerned the sharing of private data on individuals.
“If we access an individual’s information, we need to maintain security,” he said.
“We have to assure that no one unauthorized can access or steal the data,” he added.
In response to the request, the ministries have now set up a working group to discuss procedures for issuing instructions related to the process of providing motorcycle registration services and have requested information technology companies to explore technology to prevent document fraud, the statement added.
Setha said online motorcycle registration had made it much easier for the people to register as they did not need to travel to the capital.
“In the past, people could forge ID cards to get license plates in Phnom Penh. This was problematic for officials because they lacked the original data to verify ownership,” the interior ministry statement quoted Chanthol as saying.
He also said the new system ensured data could not be duplicated and it was easy to find registration records quickly.
Since 2017, the interior ministry has registered more than 540,000 motorcycles at 52 one-stop offices providing registration services.
The statement said the system has also identified irregularities, such as incorrect use of identity cards and forgery of tax receipts.
