Restoration works on the historic Kandal Srah Srang Temple is progressing well, according to the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, Mrs. Phoeurng Sackona.

The minister expressed her satisfaction on the progress as well as her appreciation for the work being carried out during her inspection tour of the restoration works in Siem Reap province.

She also spoke highly of the hard work and patience of the APSARA Authority which is leading the restoration works.

The restoration work comprises a wide range of complicated activities, including excavation, drainage of water, collection of stones, and temple structure analysis.

Witnessing the intensive work, Sackona is positive that the restoration of Kandal Srah Srang Temple will be completed seen.

The Kandal Srak Sang Temple was built in the mid-10th century and was believed to have been initiated by Kavindrarimathana, the Buddhist minister of Rajendravarman II.

It was later modified around the year 1200 by Jayavarman VII, who also added the laterite landing-stage at its western side, probably because the East Baray had been overwhelmed by sediment and had begun malfunctioning. French archeological expeditions have found a necropolis close to it. Phal Sophanith/AKP
