SINGAPORE, November 4, 2026 — Singapore has made history after Ambassador Rena Lee was elected as a judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), becoming the first Singaporean to serve on the United Nations’ principal judicial body.

Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan announced the achievement in a social media post, describing the election as a moment of immense national pride and a significant milestone for the country.

Balakrishnan said Lee’s election was particularly meaningful for a small state like Singapore, especially at a time when international law and the rules-based multilateral system face increasing pressure. He said the achievement highlighted the important role small states can play in international institutions.

He also credited the successful election to a two-year effort involving colleagues across government agencies and Singapore’s overseas missions, while thanking UN member states for their support and confidence in Lee and Singapore.

Balakrishnan acknowledged the other candidates who took part in what he described as a competitive election, noting that they brought considerable experience and qualifications to the contest.

Lee will now serve as an independent and impartial judge of the ICJ. Balakrishnan expressed confidence that she would contribute to the development of international jurisprudence.

Her election marks a historic milestone for Singapore’s participation in the international legal system.
