Cambodia has a greater rate of female employees than the neighboring countries. However, the income disparity between men and women continues to be a problem, stated The UNDP in Cambodia in a statement on its Facebook page yesterday.

Investing in policies that promote women’s employment is a good element that might increase the number of women in the workforce. Women could go to work if men could stay at home to care for their children. To boost the number of women in the workplace, the government might encourage a shift in societal mentality, it added.

Sexual harassment and violation of women’s labour rights are still a concern at workplace. To prevent this, the government should strengthen legal mechanisms to prevent and protect women from sexual harassment and other violations, the report said.

“As Cambodian women are still concentrated in the lowest paying or lower status jobs, it is imperative for the minimum wage to be set at a decent standard in relation to both living costs and median wages,” wrote the UNDP.

The government should also increase the number of women in positions of leadership at the national and subnational levels, as well as promote women’s entrepreneurship, education, and vocational training.
