Cambodia generates from US$3.5 to 4 million a year from the exports of fresh cassava and cassava starch and chips, according to Mr. Veng Sakhon, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.

In 2020, cassava was grown on a total land area of 663,929 hectares, producing 12,680,987 tonnes or 20.55 tonnes per hectare, Mr. Minister pointed out.

Cassava is considered the second most important crop in Cambodia, after paddy rice.

Recently, new national cassava policy is set to boost production and export of Cambodian cassava. Launched by the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the landmark national policy runs until 2025.

The policy was developed by the government’s cassava working group and approved by the Royal Government of Cambodia on Aug. 14, 2020. The launch of the policy marks the beginning of a new journey in Cambodia’s agribusiness development for inclusive growth, poverty reduction and the realisation of the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Industrial Development Policy 2015-2025.
