Preah Vihear provincial governor Prak Sovann on Monday instructed local authorities and residents to promote the Clean and Healthy Villages Movement at an event to mark National Sanitation Day.

The event was held in conjunction with the campaign – “Good Environmental Sanitation, Good Community Health” launched by the Environment Ministry in Siem Reap province on Sunday.

Sovann said that he encouraged public and private institutions, authorities at all levels and citizens to participate in regular cleaning and environmental protection locally. He also urged local authorities to educate people about the proper management of waste.

He advised people to clean public places regularly by collecting litter from streets, parks and markets, and called for investment in garbage collection services.

Sovann added that educational institutions, schools, pagodas and hospitals must be cleaned regularly to ensure beauty, comfort and enjoyment for visitors.

“Local authorities in villages, communes and districts must inspire people to clean their houses and land,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Environment spokesman Neth Pheaktra said that the amount of waste in cities and town has increased significantly, and the current waste management system is still limited.

He said that some waste, especially plastic, is burned and thrown into water sources, endangering biodiversity.

“This situation requires the government to set up policies and measures to modernise waste collection and management systems, starting with Phnom Penh and continuing across the country,” he said.

He added that the participation of all citizens in improving the hygiene and quality of the environment is necessary.

The Ministry of Environment celebrates National Sanitation Day in order to inspire and change the attitudes of people to love, care and clean the environment.
